Remember these key points first:
- Most orchids require water once a week. Always check if the compost is moist. Avoid over-watering as this can lead to root rot.
- Position your orchid in a bright windowsill but avoid direct sunlight. Behind a curtain or shade place away from direct sunlight will be the best.
- Repotting in fresh peat moss when your orchid stops blooming. Feed them with suitable fertilizer so that they may re-bloom again.
Trouble Shooting
Wrinkly or leathery leaves?
The underlying cause may because of the watering issue.
Too Dry
Take out the whole plants to check the roots. Healthy roots are plump and silvery green. The roots may even be white, but they should not be shriveled or brittle. Be sure to inspect the roots that are down in the potting medium, not the ones climbing out of the pot. It is okay if these roots are dry. If the deeper roots are dried out, your orchid is thirsty. Give your orchid a good soaking.
Too Wet
If roots are overwatered they will look like mush and have very little substance. If they are still bright green and you haven’t watered recently, they may be getting too much water. Too much water can cause root rot. Most orchids can tolerate a little under-watering better than a vast over-watering.
Pleated, soft leaves, droopy and bud blast?
If the problem is not caused by over-watering, air circulation and humidity is another important factor. Orchids need air movement to prevent fungal and bacterial growth on their leaves that accompany the humidity that they love. If there is little airflow in the office, there is a chance the flowers will drop earlier than expected. When insufficient airflow over orchids allows foliage to remain wet, leaves are susceptible to rotting.
How to re-bloom your orchid?
- Cut your flower about an inch away from the main stalk when the last flower drops. If the stalk has already turned brown or yellow, cut them back completely as well.
- Repotting them removing the old roots with fresh peat moss. Fertilize them again to promote new growth and move to a brighter area.
- Re-blooming will happen when there is a temperature difference between night and during the day and allow them to have to sufficient time to grow.
